Behind the Scenes: My Facebook Ads Experiment
May 18, 2026Can we talk about how hard Facebook advertising has become for small business owners?
Over the last couple of months, I ran an experiment for one of my own BrandKramp offers. It involved:
• five ad sets
• four landing page redesigns
• multiple headlines
• different positioning angles
• different calls to action
• testing free vs. paid offers
• hours of watching metrics
• endless tweaking
And ya know what?
It still didn’t convert.
Zippo conversions. ($500 later.)
Campaign paused. Maybe permanently.
Before everyone jumps in with:
“You just need a better funnel.”
“You didn’t spend enough.”
…that’s exactly the point.
This game is HARD now. And expensive. Especially for beginners like me.
I’m not new to marketing. I know how to build campaigns and analyze results. But Facebook advertising feels like it has evolved into something entirely different — almost like it was engineered to become so complicated that marketers slowly give up control.
That’s the part that bothers me most.
The platform constantly pushes you to trust Meta recommendations more than your own strategy:
Add animation.
Add music.
Resize this.
Enhance that.
Turn on Advantage+.
Make a video.
At some point, it starts feeling less like marketing and more like feeding quarters into a casino machine hoping the algorithm blesses you today.
And here’s the really frustrating part:
If Meta doesn’t think your ad will perform, it barely serves it.
Meaning the ad you’re literally paying to run… may never really get shown.
WTH?
So not to sound like a total crankpot, but if you’ve cracked the Facebook advertising code (aka getting actual conversions), you are worth your weight in gold.
And if you’re thinking about running Facebook ads?
Hire a professional.
